Uzbekistan Welcomes a New World Craft City
Traditional Iroqi embroidery has brought international recognition to Shahrisabz. The city has been named a World Craft City.
The announcement was made during the international IROQI Festival, held in Shahrisabz from August 13 to 15.
The festival brought together local and international artisans, who held workshops, took part in exhibitions and showcased their work.
The World Crafts Council awards the title. The international organization brings together craft communities and supports traditional arts and crafts around the world.
Shahrisabz became the seventh city in Uzbekistan to join the World Craft City programme. Kokand was the first, receiving the status in 2019. Bukhara and Margilan followed in 2022. In 2025, Rishtan, Shakhrikhan and Samarkand joined the programme. In 2026, Shahrisabz became the latest Uzbek city to receive the status.
