Tajikistan remains one of the last truly wild destinations for mountain tourism. Two routes — the Pamir Highway and the Fann Mountains — convey the scale of the region and the hospitality of its people.

The Pamir Highway

The world’s second-highest international road climbs above 4,600 metres. The route passes high-altitude lakes, villages of adobe houses and passes where the air thins and the landscape turns almost lunar.

The Fann Mountains

For those who prefer trekking, the Fann Mountains offer the turquoise lakes of Kulikalon and Alaudin and dozens of trails of varying difficulty. The best time to hike is July to September, when the passes are free of snow.

Local tour operators advise allowing extra days for acclimatisation and always hiring a guide — the mountains here are beautiful, but they demand respect.
