The centers are planned to be based at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty. The projects are expected to help Kazakhstan develop its own technologies, conduct research and train specialists.

What the centers will focus on

The first center will focus on renewable energy. It will be established in partnership with China’s PowerChina Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited. Researchers will work on new energy solutions and explore how they can be applied in practice.

The second center will specialize in artificial intelligence. In partnership with Fudan University and Dominor Partners Limited, it will develop AI solutions for the energy sector, industry, oil and gas, and transport.

The third center will focus on digital data storage technologies. It will be established in partnership with China’s Shenzhen EAGET Innovation Technology Co., Ltd. Its main areas of work will include data storage technologies and digital infrastructure.

How AI is transforming the energy sector

Kazakhstan is already introducing artificial intelligence across its fuel and energy sector. These technologies help analyze data, forecast resource consumption and detect potential equipment failures.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, the sector has a portfolio of 45 AI projects, 34 of which are currently being implemented. Three separate AI-based solutions are expected to generate an annual economic benefit of around 23 billion tenge.
