Scientists from Kazakhstan and Belgium will collaborate on research and the development of AI technologies. Their initial projects will focus on personalised learning and the early screening of Parkinson’s disease.

Mathematics: The Foundation of AI

The lab will be part of the AI Labs initiative, which aims to foster joint research with international universities at the Alem.ai centre in Astana.

Mathematical methods underpin AI model training. They are used to optimise algorithms, analyse data and generate predictions. The lab will bring together fundamental mathematical research and practical applications of artificial intelligence.

Researchers from Ghent University and Kazakhstan will work together on joint projects. The lab will also train young specialists, support technology startups and attract international funding.

The First Projects

The lab’s initial initiatives include NeuroLearn and ParkScreen.

NeuroLearn will explore the use of artificial intelligence, neuroscience and adaptive learning. These technologies are intended to analyse learning processes and tailor educational approaches to students’ individual needs.

ParkScreen will explore how AI can be used for the early screening of Parkinson’s disease.

The projects were presented during a visit to the Alem.ai International Centre by Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Mathilde.

Joint Research

Kazakhstan and Belgium plan to submit joint funding applications under Horizon Europe, the European Union’s research and innovation programme.

International research projects are expected to give scientists access to partner research teams, research infrastructure and opportunities to develop technologies collaboratively.

Cooperation is also expanding into other fields. Kazakhstan and Belgian universities are exploring joint research in mathematical modelling, scientific computing, digital twins and artificial intelligence.
